TachoSil®
Product description: TachoSil® (surgical patch) combines the bioactive mechanism of action of human coagulation factors, fibrinogen and thrombin, with the mechanical support of a collagen patch. TachoSil® is approved for haemostasis (control of bleeding), and for sealing of tissues in surgery. Upon contact with blood or other fluids, the coagulation factors react to form a fibrin clot that sticks TachoSil® to the tissue surface, producing an air- and liquid-tight seal in three to five minutes. TachoSil® was launched in 2004 and is available in more than 30 countries. In April 2010, Tachosil® was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. In the United States, TachoSil® will be launched by Nycomed’s distribution and marketing partner Baxter International.
Medical need: The TachoSil® patch meets a critical need that surgeons have in achieving fast and reliable haemostasis and sealing of soft tissues. It provides protection against post-operative re-bleedings and leaks that can lead to re-operations and extended hospital stays. Furthermore, it eliminates the need for surgical removal because it is made from collagen, a substance that is naturally absorbed by the body.
