What is Travellers’ Diarrhoea?

Travellers’ Diarrhoea (TD) often referred to as “Bali Belly” or “Delhi Belly” is the most common illness affecting international travellers. It is commonly caused by a bacteria called Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and follows ingestion of contaminated food (e.g. raw foods including salads, unpeeled fruits) or water. TD is characterised by fever, belly cramps and profuse watery diarrhoea lasting for several days that often leads to dehydration.

How can I avoid Travellers’ Diarrhoea?

• Washing your hands often, especially before eating
• Avoiding eating from street kiosks
• Use only bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth
• Avoid salads and other uncooked food
• Take medication such as Travelan

What is Travelan?

Travelan is a natural product which is specifically designed to reduce the risk of infection by ETEC, the most common cause of TD.

In which countries do I take Travelan?

Any country different from that in which you normally live could potentially be a threat due to the different varieties of bacteria. Some areas are a higher risk to travellers, such as South and Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Indian sub-continent. Areas with poor sanitation – in particular regarding water supply – are especially high-risk.

When do I take Travelan?

Travelan should be taken before every meal. Additional caplets may be taken when increased cover is required, eg. when snacking between meals or if circumstances suggest an increased risk of infection.

How does Travelan Work?

Travelan’s active ingredient is Bovine Colostrum, a rich source of antibodies that bind to ETEC in the gastrointestinal tract, preventing them from attaching to the intestinal wall and thereby neutralising their ability to cause TD and its associated symptoms.

Has Travelan been clinically tested?

Yes. Travelan has undergone independent double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trials in Europe and the USA. The trials showed protection of up to 90% against infection with the type of E.coli that causes TD. In addition trials showed a significant reduction in abdominal cramps and stomach pain compared to those who did not receive Travelan. There were no reported side effects in the clinical trials.
