Main areas of our research
We are concentrating on two main therapeutic areas: diseases of inflammation and the respiratory tract . To this end Nycomed and its international subsidiaries invest a considerable part of their earnings from sales in research and development.
Nycomed’s global R&D centre, located in Mumbai, India includes the Global Discovery and Global Data Management. Both these departments contribute mainly to the goal of Nycomed to develop highly effective and safe medicines.
Global Discovery
The research and development of a new drug takes a long time, sometimes up to 15 years or more. The early phase is “discovery research” in which new biological targets and the appropriate active substances have to be found. This is followed by a preclinical phase in which all necessary preparations are made to test a new drug in human beings for the first time. On successful completion of the preclinical phase, clinical development then starts, the successful completion of which ends with the registration of a new drug for the treatment of patients.
The major focus of the Chemical Research Institute is the design and synthesis of novel chemical compounds within the drug discovery phase of Nycomed Pharma Private Limited's drug development projects. State of the art technologies as well as our international scientific network strongly support our efforts within medicinal chemistry . Along with the synthesis of new molecules in medicinal chemistry, scientists have significantly impacted new project ideas for drug discovery, lead finding projects and lead optimization projects. The first candidate for this year for the HDAC project for the treatment of cancer came from these laboratories. NBBI and Combichem groups have the important function of providing diversity of chemical motifs and compound library that will lead to better chemical hits in lead discovery phase. In addition, the ‘other synthesis activities’ will support medicinal chemistry efforts to do preliminary scale-up of chemical leads and intermediates, that are required to carry out lead optimization activities.
Global Data Management
The mission for our Global Data Management Department is strategic planning and expertise for all data management activities to ensure quality deliverables. This department provides data management expertise for Nycomed and ensures oversight measures for all the data management activities for the trials outsourced to CROs by implementing high level Standard Operating Procedures and ensuring compliance to regulatory standards like GCP, 21 CFR Part 11 and industry standards like CDASH for data acquisition.
The department has highly qualified personnel with several years of experience in the area of clinical data management and they are trained in DM activities like SQL/PLSQL programming, clinical coding, data validation etc for outsourced as well as in house studies.The department also has a global responsiblility for maintenance of Data Acquisition Standards. The department also has the capabilities to provide full service data management activities inhouse that include database development, database design, programming validation checks, clinical coding, electronic data transfer, Query Management, Medical review, DB closure and lock.
The site therefore is recognized for its ability to deliver quality and reliable data quickly with significant cost efficiency.
Asia-Pacific and India
The emerging markets in Asia-Pacific and in particular India, with their vast population, demographic characteristics, have opened ample opportunities and needs for quality healthcare and are continuing to draw attention as well as pose new challenges.
