Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the most prevalent acid-related disease in the Western world. It is estimated to affect 25% of the general population. GERD results from the frequent regurgitation of acidic stomach contents into the esophagus. The esophagus’ inner lining, the mucosa, becomes inflamed and ulcerations often develop. Reduction of gastric acid secretion is the mainstay of GERD treatment.

Peptic ulcer diseases

The stomach and duodenum contain fluids that are highly acidic. These organs rely on a number of defensive mechanisms to protect themselves from the potentially aggressive fluids. If the defensive mechanisms are weakened, the lining of the inner organ can be damaged and ulcers may form. This can result in an array of symptoms, mainly upper abdominal pain and discomfort. If the ulcers are close to a blood vessel, gastric or duodenal bleeding can occur. The reduction of gastric acid secretion is the most common form of treatment for peptic ulcer disease.

Duodenal ulcers are most frequently caused by an infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Eradicating these bacteria with a combination therapy of two antibiotics and acid suppressive therapy with a proton pump inhibitor heals duodenal ulcers in most cases.

Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome

Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome is caused by a rare form of tumour. These tumours produce gastrin, which stimulates gastric acid secretion without regulation. Excessive secretion of gastric acid is a major cause of ulcer diseases and GERD. Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome leads to a high risk of complications such as internal bleeding. Patients normally respond well to treatment with high doses of proton pump inhibitors.
