Nycomed’s R&D strategy relies on a fine balance of internal expertise and strong external partners to provide our future products. We look for business opportunities at all stages of drug development, including discovery.
We maintain a flexible in-house R&D organization that spans from discovery, pre-clinical stages through successive phases of clinical research all the way to registration. Our internal capabilities were demonstrated by the regulatory submission of roflumilast in 2009 after the successful conclusion of extensive clinical trials. At the same time, Nycomed aims to fill most of its pipeline with drugs acquired by in-licensing agreements or through joint development with external partners. The company is thus in a better position to reap the benefits of exciting discoveries that are increasingly made by small biotech firms.
Joint efforts and early alignment
A key concept driving the development of our pipeline of future products at Nycomed is ‘dual leadership’ between R&D and Marketing & Sales. We bring together marketing and business functions in evaluating drug candidates at early development stage. This fosters greater alignment between commercial perspectives and development options, and allows quicker decisions on the potential of new medicine and on design of clinical trials. In this way, we can ensure that valuable time and resources are spent where they matter most.
